WELCOME TO Harpenden Helping Hand
We are a small and friendly community charity. We try to live up to our name and to do so efficiently, informally and confidentially.
ABOUT HARPENDEN HELPING HAND
The charity was founded in 1971 and started as a 'good neighbour' scheme, ideally having one person in every road in the town to whom people could turn to when in need. Help would be provided by a Harpenden Helping Hand volunteer or, if more appropriate, the person would be put in touch with other local groups or services who could assist them. Times have changed and we are now run by a central committee (all unpaid volunteers) whose job it is to recruit and manage our 100 volunteer helpers.
WHOM DO WE HELP AND WHAT CAN WE OFFER?
We want to help anyone in Harpenden who needs a 'helping hand', whatever their age or circumstances. We help by befriending, collecting prescriptions or shopping for the housebound or those recently out of hospital. The single biggest activity though is transport. We drive people to hospitals and doctors' surgeries, the Day Centre, the dentist and the shops - when taking public transport or a taxi would be difficult. We trust this valuable service will only be used by those with a real, practical need. All we ask is as much notice as possible, and a small donation to the charity for the help received. If we cannot provide help ourselves, we do our utmost to advise people of alternative services.
"I am a blind 82 year old lady and have benefited from help with my shopping for the past 8 years which has been invaluable. Another volunteer takes me out for a walk every week or so, weather permitting! I am extremely grateful for the excellent, friendly help they provide."
"My wife cannot speak and has limited mobility due to a hip replacement. The assistance of Helping Hand has enabled her to undertake shopping trips and to attend clinics at the local hospital. This has been invaluable and is very much appreciated"
